CHINA -- A pair of Silicon Valley high school girls won gold medals this week at the China Girls Math Olympiad. Jing Jing Li of Sunnyvale and Lynnelle Ye of Palo Alto earned top spots in the competition that had 48 teams taking part to show off their math skills.

Cynthia Day of San Jose won a silver medal and [Lynnelle Ye] helped the US take second place overall right behind the host nation, China.

The annual event promotes math for girls, a discipline too often dominated by boys. All three girls had won medals at the Olympiad before.
