Biography

Sylvia T. Bozeman is Professor of Mathematics at Spelman College where she has served in various roles, including Mathematics Department Chair and Associate Provost for Science and Mathematics. In mathematics she earned the BS degree from Alabama A&M University, the MA from Vanderbilt University, and the PhD from Emory University. The areas of her research and publications have included operator theory in functional analysis, projects in image processing, and efforts to enhance the success of groups currently underrepresented in mathematics.

In a special partnership between the mathematics departments of Spelman College and Bryn Mawr College, Bozeman co-directs Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE), a national program that assists women in mathematics in making the transition from college to graduate school. The EDGE Program is a successor to the Spelman-Bryn Mawr Summer Mathematics Program, also co-directed by Bozeman, which was designed to attract first and second year college women to a career in mathematics. In 2007 the EDGE Program was given special recognition by the American Mathematics Society for its effectiveness.

Actively involved in several professional organizations, Sylvia Bozeman has served terms on the executive boards of four mathematical societies: the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematical Society, the Association for Women in Mathematics and the National Association of Mathematicians. Recently she co-organized the national forum on “Promoting Diversity at the Graduate Level in Mathematics” which was hosted at the MSRI. Bozeman has served on MSRI’s Human Resources Advisory Committee (HRAC) where she now serves a two-year term as HRAC co-chair with Ricardo Cortez.
