Personal Profile of Dr. Robin T Wilson

Biography
Robin Wilson is a Professor of Mathematics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The product of the public school system in Sacramento, CA, he attended UC Berkeley where he developed a passion for teaching mathematics as a student in Berkeley’s Professional Development Program started by Uri Treisman. After earning his Bachelors degree in Mathematics in 1999, he went on to obtain his Masters degree in Mathematics from Howard University in 2001 and his PhD in Mathematics from UC Davis in 2006. He joined the faculty at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 2007 after an appointment as a UC Presidents’ Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Mathematics at UC Santa Barbara. He was selected as a Project NExT Fellow in 2007 and most recently Dr. Wilson was a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University in 2014. His current research interests include both low-dimensional topology and math education, and he has publications in both fields.

Dr. Wilson’s other interests include working with projects that increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences such as the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences and the Pacific Math Alliance where he serves as a mentor. At SACNAS he has co-organized several Scientific Symposium Sessions and has also participated as a speaker and as a mentor. He is an active member of the National Association of Mathematicians where he currently serves as a board member. In addition, he is a member of the Diversity Committee for the Park City Mathematics Institute. He has also served on the Editorial Board for the College Mathematics Journal since 2014.

He also has interests in math literacy, equity, and access that have led to his involvement with the Algebra Project, a national organization of mathematics teachers, educators, and mathematicians, that uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality education for America’s youth.
