Andrei Zelevinsky received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1978 from the Moscow State University. He moved to US in the Fall of 1990 and spent a year at Cornell University as a visiting professor. In 1991 he joined Northeastern University, where he has been a full professor since 1993.

Dr. Zelevinsky's current research focuses on algebraic and combinatorial methods in the representation theory, and algebraic and polyhedral combinatorics. His recent significant achievement is the discovery (in collaboration with Sergey Fomin) of cluster algebras, a new algebraic structure that has found a number of exciting connections and applications: quiver representations, preprojective algebras, Calabi-Yau algebras and categories, Teichmüller theory, discrete integrable systems, Poisson geometry.

Dr. Zelevinsky has held numerous visiting positions at universities and research institutes around the world, and has given numerous plenary and invited lectures. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress in Berlin in 1998. He has been the recipient of Humboldt Research Award supporting his long-term visits to the University of Bielefeld. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Advances in Mathematics, International Mathematics Research Notices, Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Algebra & Number Theory, and is a managing editor of Transformation Groups.
