| Ursula Hamenstädt studied at the Technical University Clausthal Zellerfeld (Germany), the University of Zürich (Switzerland), the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris, France) and the University of Bonn (Germany), where she earned a PhD in 1986. After spending two years in Berkeley as a Miller fellow, she joined the California Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor in 1988 and moved to Bonn in 1990 as an Associate Professor, being promoted to a Full Professor in 1992. Hamenstädt's main areas of interest are differential geometry, dynamical systems, geometric group theory and Teichmüller theory. She was an invited speaker at the first European Congress in Mathematics in 1992, and an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematics in 2010 (Section Topology). She is an inaugural Fellow of the AMS and a member of the German Academy of Science Leopoldina. Her work has been continuously supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft with individual and group grants. In 2010, she received an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council. Throughout her career, Hamenstädt served on various scientific panels and advisory committees. She promotes mathematics for high school students in Germany through the Bundeswettbewerb Mathematik. She was a member of the scientific committee of the Humboldt Foundation, the Mathematisch Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach and the advisory board of the Max Planck Institut für Mathematik in Bonn. |
